Archaeological sites, beaches, and unique tavernas

Sounio is one of the best places for day trips, with beautiful beaches, unique attractions, and charming tavernas. Located at the southernmost tip of Attica, it is ideal for visiting during the summer months, as well as in September. A visit to the Temple of Poseidon is a must, where the Athenians once controlled the passage to the Aegean Sea and the port of Piraeus. The breathtaking view of the sea and the sunset is truly unique and not to be missed. About 400 meters from the Temple of Poseidon lies the sanctuary of Athena, and just outside of Lavrio, you will find the archaeological site of Thorikos, with its famous oval ancient theater, dating back to the 6th century BC.

The area also boasts several beautiful beaches, such as Sounio Beach, located just below the Temple of Poseidon. A few kilometers away, you’ll come across the beaches of Legrena and Harakas, with their stunning fine sand. Two more beaches worth visiting are KAPE and Skalakia Beach, in the Althea settlement, which are among the most beautiful in the region. Finally, take a walk through the Sounio National Park and explore the mining tunnels from the previous century. After your time by the sea and your stroll in the park, it will certainly be time for a meal at one of the traditional tavernas with a view of the Temple of Poseidon.
